It is so sad to see my students with their heads all lowered focusing on their iphones. My friends and family too have fallen under the spell of this pernicious social/cultural obsession. Not to boast but by keeping my self cell phone-free I have been able to keep a serious, sober perspective while I observe the futility of selfies, Facebook, etc...,etc....
My entire academic career has been focused on the mission of exposing the lies of the 'smarter planet'---the false religion of progress. The negative dialectic consists in exposing the anti-human aspect of technology; the positive dialectic consists in rediscovering and awakening of the analogue talents and gifts that the Creator so graciously bestowed upon all of us. It is a parallel to the movement in Plato's allegory of the cave---ascending to light and truth (analogue) and descending dialectic into the realm of shadows and human slavery, primarily mental slavery (Wm Blake's 'mind forg'd manacles').
